Port workers unions defer strike plan

T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai, Aug. 29 The proposed indefinite strike from September 1 by port and dock workers unions in major ports has been deferred by 20 days.

This was decided at a reconciliation meeting held by the Regional Labour Commissioner (RLC) with representatives from the union, ports and shipping department in Mumbai on Tuesday. The RLC appealed to union representatives to ‘create a congenial atmosphere for discussion’ on their demands. “We hope the government will call us for discussions,” according to a union source.

The strike was to press for various demands, including restoration of retirement age from 58 to 60 years. The unions are also demanding a monthly interim relief of Rs 1,000 to all workers and pensioners with effect from January 1, 2007 till a new wage settlement is signed.

The unions are Water Transport Workers’ Federation of India, All India Port and Dock Workers Federation, All India Port and Dock Workers Federation (Workers), Port, Dock and Water Front Workers Federation and Indian National Port and Dock Workers Federation.
