Chennai, Aug. 29 Besides gaining a thorough understanding of their course material, it is important that students develop an interest in research and development.

According to Mr Narendra Parthasarathy, Human Resources-Head, Infosys, students should be steadfast and persevering however tough and challenging their projects are. He added that they should be open to new ideas.

Symposium

Mr Parthasarathy was addressing students of the department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Sri Sairam Engineering College, Tambaram.

He brought to the students’ attention the need to “apply technical knowledge in a different aspect” which was what the IT industry was looking for.

He was delivering the inaugural address at Zephyrix ’07, the seventh technical symposium organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the college.

Mr S. Adhinarayanan, Head-Computer Centre, IGCAR, delivered the special address that focussed on the evolution of cellular technology.

His technical presentation covered the various wireless technologies available in the market and traced the development of cellular technology, beginning with the work of Martin Cooper, who is credited with inventing the first cellular phone.

The evolution of cellular technology began with development of analog cellular which transformed into digital cellular and finally evolved into digital multimedia.

While the wireless/radio telephonic system involved one base station, the cellular telephonic system involved many base stations, with each set of cells termed a cell cluster.

While Dr S. Seetharaman, Dean, welcomed the gathering, Dr Kanappan, Principal, delivered the felicitation address. Ms P.M. Beulah Devamalar, Head of the Department, delivered the convenor’s address, highlighting the developmental activities of the department.
