The auctions conducted by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) on Thursday fetched Rs 236 crore amidst protests by the Telugu Desam and Left leaders, objecting to what they described as “the sell-out of valuable lands in the vicinity of Visakhapatnam city”.
The protesting opposition leaders and party activists were taken into custody to facilitate auctions and later released.
According to VUDA sources, eight plots (Government lands) and three more belonging to the VUDA were put on auction, of which five Government plots and two of VUDA were sold. The plots are situated at Madhurawada, Yendada, Nerellavalasa and Vemulavalasa.
The plot at Yendada, of 17.30 acres, fetched the highest price — Rs 5.78 crore. The auction began with the initial price of Rs 3 crore fixed by the VUDA.
Mr Jaheer Ahmed, City President of the Telugu Desam party, Ch. Narasinga Rao, CPI (M) leader, and several others condemned the Government policy of selling away valuable lands for short-term resource mobilisation.
They said it showed a lack of planning and they accused the Government and VUDA of “handing over highly valuable lands in a growing city to private individuals and institutions on a platter”.
