Kolkata, Aug. 31 Wal-Mart subsidiary Gazeley Ltd is scouting for an Indian partner for its proposed foray into India. The UK-based logistic space (warehousing and others) provider plans to set up shop in Gurgaon in the next couple of weeks.

“We already operate a number of partnerships with funds, landowners and other developers outside India. So it is very likely that we adopt the same approach,” Mr James Behrens, Country Director (India), Gazeley Ltd, told Business Line in response to queries by e-mail. However, he did not give further details on the nature of the proposed partnerships.

Gazeley’s entry closely follows Wal-Mart’s formal entry to India. The global retail giant has recently signed a couple of agreements with Bharti Enterprises to form Bharti Wal-Mart Private Ltd, a joint venture for their wholesale cash-and-carry and back end supply chain management operations.

Mr Behrens will arrive in Delhi on September 7to start Gazeley’s India operation.

Investment areas

In India, the company plans logistic development and light industrial development projects in areas where there is an element of processing or manufacturing. The company is already looking to recruit and plans to maintain low headcount initially. On investment, Mr Behrens said, “We have not committed to a sum yet.”

Gazeley holds 12 per cent share of the UK logistic space market and will be the second global logistic player to enter the Indian market following Pro Logis of the US. The latter is a major player in supply chain distribution services.

The proposed entry to India is in line with Gazeley’s plans to have presence in the emerging markets and follows the company’s recent foray in China.

According to informational available on the web, besides UK, the company has presence in France, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy and China. The customers of Gazeley include Volkswagen, Procter and Gamble, Shell, DHL and TNT.
