Areca growers seek help from Kerala, Karnataka

Mangalore, Sept. 1 Arecanut growers and cooperatives from Karnataka will seek assistance from Karnataka and Kerala governments over the loss due to fruit rot disease.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday evening, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister, said that a delegation of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, will meet the Kerala Chief Minister on September 3. The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achutanandan, is scheduled to visit Manjeshwar in Kasaragod district of Kerala on September 3. During his visit, Campco will explain the problems of the sector to him and seek assistance from the Government.

Added to this, stakeholders from red and white arecanut-growing areas will meet the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yediyurappa, at Bangalore on September 4 to discuss the problems of arecanut sector.

Mr Shetty said the loss due to idisease has been estimated up to 80 per cent in some areas. It may be mentioned here that the Mr Kumaraswamy had told presspersons during his recent visit to Mangalore that he would convene a meeting of the stakeholders from arecanut sector to discuss their problems.
