Requisition for rakes cancelled

Reports have it that more than 10,000 out of a total of 15,000 indents for iron rakes pending with one of the zonal Railways for the past few years have been cancelled by those who had placed requisition for these rakes. Inquiries reveal a startling fact. An estimated 12,000 to 13,000 of these indents related to only four sidings located at Barbil, Jaruli, Barjamda and Banspani. The Railway officials touring these sidings noted with surprise that there was not a grain of o re lying there. But this should not be the case. Any requisition for a rake should be backed by firm commitment of supply of the material to be moved by the rake. Which means the suspicion proved to be true — the requisitions were for speculative purpose, not for actual movement. The Railways immediately ordered placing of rakes at the sidings concerned and asked those who had placed indents to load the rakes as per their requisitions. As expected, no loading was possible because there was no ore. Since the detention of rakes beyond the stipulated five hours would attract penal charges, the cancellations started pouring in.
