Letters Spectrum allocation
Your editorial “Slicing the Spectrum” (Business Line, September 1) has covered important aspects of the Indian telecom industry. It has rightly emphasised the need for taking the mobile phone facility to the people in ru ral areas at a lower tariffs in view of their lower purchasing power. With the huge increase in the number of cell-phone customers in recent years, the economies of scale have resulted in a high margin of profits to the existing service providers. This should enable them to accommodate the potential rural customers, duly considering the affordability factor involved. It is not out of place to refer to certain unfair practices adopted by certain, if not all, in regard to the small-print clauses in dealing with some customers. Often, the service-providers seem to be indulging in these undesirable practices in their anxiety to attract more clients to a particular company because of stiff competition among themselves. Such unfair methods result in avoidable bitterness in customer relations. Frequent switching of loyalties by customers is mainly attributable to this flaw. Transparent and fair practices at all times will help service-providers concentrate on their growth and yet aim to satisfy the millions of people yet to avail their services. M. V. Nagavender Rao, Grand Ledge, US
