AP to contest ruling on mining lease

Hyderabad, Sept. 2

The Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to contest the High Court judgment that set aside the order granting mining lease to Obulapuram Mining Company.

Reacting to the judgement, Ms P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, Minister for Mines and Geology, said the Government would file an appeal before the Divisional Bench of the court.

“The judgment is well taken by the Government. We have not yet received the copy of the judgement. We will deliberate on the judgement once we receive it,” she said in a press release.

The allotment of 453 acres to OMC, promoted by Mr Gali Ganaradhana Reddy, triggered a controversy in the State with Opposition parties alleging favouritism in the grant of the mining lease.

Refuting the criticism that the judgement vindicated Opposition claims, the Minister said only a few of the 1,251 mining leases were set aside by the courts.

Stating that the Government followed all procedures in granting leases, she was hopeful of getting a favourable verdict from the bench.
