Complex pile: The edifice at the corner of Government Place East and Esplanade Row East (now Sido-Kanho Dahar), opposite Kolkata’s Raj Bhavan, from which a block of concrete loosened and fell to the pavement last week, injuring a passerby. The building, known as Esplanade Mansions, is nearly 100 years old and has given a warning that unless it is maintained better by its present public sector owners, more such accidents can occur leading to much greater damage to life and limb than what happened last week.
