Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports
Export receipts up 132%: Assocham

New Delhi, Sept 2

Between fiscals 2000 and 2006, the country's exports receipts increased 132 per cent as against 195 per cent import proceeds, according to industry chamber Assocham. Exports to the Asean region recorded the highest growth at 257 per cent, followed by Africa at 198 per cent growth. The signing of free trade agreement with Asean could accelerate export growth by nearly 500 per cent by 2010. Similarly, a little more focus on exports to Africa could push growth rate to over 350 per cent by 2010, according to the chamber. According to data available with the chamber, the products that recorded top export growth include semi-precious stones, mineral fuels, nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances, and electrical machineries. In the case of WANA (West Asia and North Africa) and Latin America, exports grew by 197 per cent and 193 per cent respectively because both these regions have large demand for Indian organic chemicals, pharmaceutical products, apparel and clothing, vehicles, rolling stocks and cotton, according to the chamber. - Our Bureau
