Supply Chain Management Container facility coming up at Tuticorin port
Our Correspondent Madurai, Sept. 3 The Chennai-based Sical Distriparks Ltd is setting up an empty container yard (ECY) and a container freight station (CFS) on a 20-acre plot near Tuticorin Port at an estimated cost Rs 25 crore. The ECY will have facilities for repair, storage and maintenance of 7,500 TEUs of containers a month. The CFS facility can handle 30,000 TEUs in a year. The station will provide transit facilities with services for handling and temporary storage of import- and export-laden and empty containers, carried under the control of Customs. With this facility, the company from the SPIC Group is planning to increase its market share to 15 per cent of the total volume of containers handled at Tuticorin Port. There are also plans to set up CFS in Mumbai and Pipavav (Gujarat) and an inland container depot in Bangalore – all to become operational by 2009-10, sources said.
