Our Bureau

Bangalore, Sept. 3 A contract worth $6.5 million to supply rail bearings for freight cars built by Titagarh Wagons Ltd (TWL) in India has strengthened Timken India’s hopes to expand in the railway sector that is expected to witness a strong growth with several long-term plans such as Mumbai-Mumbai and Kolkata Delhi freight corridors being part of it.

Timken India has, in the last 18 months, doubled its capacity to 120,000 bearings of all types while it plans to ramp it up to 5,00,000 with the flexibility to meet the growing demand of the rail sector. Mr Gordon Robinson, Managing Director, Timken India, told Business Line that the Jamshedpur plant has emerged as the centre of excellence for rail products, and new subsidiary Timken India Manufacturing Pvt Ltd (TIMPL), coming up in the Special Economic Zone of Mahindra City near C hennai will focus on bearings of 300 mm to 350 mm for larger industrial applications such as steel, predominantly for exports.

TIMPL, expected to start production by year end, will have a turnover $50 million. The company is already contemplating a second phase by 2009.

Timken India’s current revenue from sales from the Jamshedpur unit was $69 million.

It also hopes to increase its sourcing of components and bearings from India to $100 million by the next three years from the current $35 million.

With the aviation sector asserting its influence on the economy, Timken India was eyeing this sector for opportunities, said Mr Robinson, adding Timken was also keen to tap the potential for its products in the maintenance, repair and overhauling (MRO) business that was expected to grow.
