Industry & Economy - Trade & Labour Unions
2 global trade union bodies to be merged

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Sept. 3

Two major international trade union organisations have decided to merge and form the Asia Pacific regional unit of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).

Union leaders from 29 countries belonging to 48 trade union organisations are attending a two-day merger conference here on September 5 and 6 to formalise the merger of Asia Pacific Regional Organisation of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the Brotherhood of Asian Trade Unions (BATU), the regional organisation of the World Confederation of Labour (WLC).

Announcing this at a press conference on Monday, Mr Noriyuki Suzuki, General Secretary, ICFTU-APRO, and Mr N.M. Adyanthaya, Vice-President, All-India Indian National Trade Union Congress (AITUC), said the move became impetrative because globalisation failed to bridge the gap between the economic development and growth of employment resulting in widening chasm between the rich and the poor. The meet’s emphasis would be on monitoring of effective implementation of the international labour charters and extending mechanism for inclusive participation of the informal sector.

The new organisation will also study the restrictive labour practices and denial of workers rights export promotion zones and special economic zones.

The conference would further shape the mechanism of inclusion of the labour force in the multilateral economic integration processes such as WTO in collaboration with the Global Union Federations.
