Convergence States - Andhra Pradesh Reddy moots common ticket for MMTS
Our Bureau Hyderabad, Sept. 3 After four years of its inception, MMTS (multi-modal transport system) is going to have a common ticket, which will allow commuters to use it for travel in local trains and public transport buses. At a review meeting here on Monday, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked the officials of SCR (South Central Railway) and State Government to introduce the common ticket. “In all likelihood, the ticket is going to cost Rs 400 a piece,” a statement said. Revenues would be shared equally between the railways and APSRTC (AP State Transport Corporation Limited. Commuters have been demanding Indian Railways and the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) to introduce a common ticket to improve convenience. The phase-I of MMTS was introduced in 2003, connecting Secunderabad, Nampally and Lingampally. A year later, the transport system covered Secunderabad-Falaknuma stretch. The phase-II was proposed to cover Secunderabad with Shamshabad where a new international airport is coming up. The phase will also connect Ghatkesar and Medchal with Secunderabad. The system was conceived with a view to reducing pressure on the city traffic. Though it received lukewarm response initially, MMTS was registering higher occupancy rates of late. A special purpose vehicle will be floated to make the system viable.
