Sell onions to avoid storage losses, TN farmers told

Prices may rise to Rs 10-15 a kg by October

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Sept. 3 The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s market advisory cell has asked onion growers to sell the kharif crop to avoid storage losses during rainy season.

The university’s Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC), analysing the price data for small onion raised during kharif and due for harvest in August-September months in Tamil Nadu, said the price quoted at Rs 8-12 per kg depending on quality will go up to Rs 10-Rs 15 by October.

If it rains heavily in the major production centres of Perambalur, Erode, Palladam and Tirupur, farm price may gobeyond Rs.15.

The late kharif sowing of onion is likely by November and hence the demand for seed onion will push up the price beyond Rs 15 a kg.

The statement said the DEMIC study of the State’s two major onion markets at Ottanchathram and Dindigul covered aspects such as the overall crop area, supply from Karnataka coinciding with the arrivals of the state’s own crop during the periods between March-April and August and the rainfall occurrences during harvest etc. Tamil Nadu’s crop is dominated by small onion varieties constituting 70 per cent of the area with the remaining acreage under Bellary onion varieties.

The most popular small onion varieties cultivated in the state are CO1, CO2, CO3, CO4, CO5, MDU5 and Bangalore rose. Perambalur, Tiruchi and Dindigul districts account for more than 50% of the crop area.
