Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 4 The Kerala Government is planning to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Smart City project in Kochi this month itself.

Replying to questions in the State Assembly on Tuesday, the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said that 222 acres of land for the project had already been acquired and steps were afoot to acquire another 24 acres. Infrastructure such as roads, water and power supply has also been readied.

Besides, the Chairman and Managing Director for the company has been appointed, he said.

Replying to another question, the Chief Minister said that Tamil Nadu was not digging any canal to take water directly from Mullaperiyar dam to Bodinaikkannur. The water from the dam was first being taken to the lower camp in Tamil Nadu and from there to Bodinaikkannur and the canal for the purpose was being prepared within that State, for which no permission was required from Kerala, he added.

People’s bazaars

The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Mr C. Divakaran, told the House that the Government would open ‘people’s bazaars’ in all the districts in the State as part of its market intervention strategy to regulate the prices of essential commodities. These apart, ‘metro people’s bazaars’ would be opened in all the major cities.

The Minister said in reply to a question that the Government would take a re-look at the licences issued to multinationals to enter the retail sector in the State.

While initiating legal steps to prevent multinationals from entering the sector, the Civil Supplies Corporation will be equipped to face the increased competition, he said.

He said that the corporation planned to start distribution of LPG cylinders to consumers in the State. The shortage of cylinders for domestic consumers was due to the efforts of the oil companies to reduce their losses, he added.
