Wipro Mission 10X launched

Bangalore, Sept. 5 Mr Azim H. Premji, Wipro Chairman, who has been championing the cause of quality education, announced on Wednesday the launch of Wipro Mission 10X to address skills shortage affecting the IT industry’s growth.
Announcing the initiative conceived by the global IT services company, Wipro Technologies, Mr Premji said: “Mission 10X is to create systematic changes to current teaching-learning practices in engineering education. We hope by training the faculty along industry standards, the employability level of engineering graduates and diploma holders will improve.”
India is turning out five lakh engineering graduates and diploma holders annually, while in China the estimated figure is six lakh, in the US 75,000, and in Germany 25,000, Mr Premji said.
“While the number of graduates is growing 12-18 per cent each year, industry surveys show barely 20 per cent can be readily absorbed. This widening gap between demand and supply in skilled human resources has serious long-term implications and could affect our standing in the global IT services market,” he added.
Mr Premji and IIT-Bombay faculty Mr Kannan Moudgalya told the gathering that the current financial year would see 1,000 faculty getting trained, with sessions also planned in smaller centres such as Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam.
