ILD licence: More info sought from Idea

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi, Sept. 5 The Department of Telecom has found deficiencies in Idea Cellular’s application for international long distance telephony licence.

The company has been asked to submit a copy of the shareholders agreement and certify that the chief financial officer and technical officer are resident Indians in line with the new guidelines for telecom operators.

Idea Cellular had applied for an ILD licence in August. DoT officials said that the information being sought from the company was routine in nature and it did not imply that there was any problem with the application. They said that the information being sought would enable the department to process the application further.

Idea Cellular at present offers mobile services in 11 circles. The company has applied for a pan-India licence. If it gets the ILD licence, then the company can leverage the benefits of an integrated player. At present Idea routes its long distance traffic through other operators.

Ever since the Government relaxed the entry norms for the ILD segment, a number of operators have entered the fray to grab a pie of the Rs 4,000-crore market.
