Tourism States - Kerala Kerala plans eco-tourism project in Malabar area
Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 5 The Kerala Government is planning to launch an eco-tourism project covering the northern districts of the State. The Minister for Home Affairs and Tourism, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said in the State Assembly on Wednesday that the project, Malabar – Mangalore Eco-Tourism Circuit, would focus on the rivers and waterways in the region. The Government would seek financial assistance from the Centre for implementing the project. Replying to questions, the Minister said that a Rs 588-crore project had already been submitted to the Centre for the development of an eco-tourism circuit in the southern districts of the State. The Government was now laying emphasis on the concept of ‘responsible tourism’ featuring environment-friendly schemes. This would also ensure benefits to the local community. He informed the House that as many as 2.69 lakh foreign and 32.75 domestic tourists visited the State during the six-month period till June this year. A consultant would be appointed to prepare a master plan for developing Munnar as an international tourism destination, he added. ‘Hawala’ racket
Replying to another question, the Minister said that the Government was considering setting up of a special mechanism to deal with fake currency rackets. A police team had already been put in place to probe ‘hawala’ transactions in the wake of some major cases having come into the light recently. He noted that there had been a spurt in ‘hawala’ rackets following the changes made in the Central laws.
