Intel unveils Xeon quad-core processors

Can handle multiple tasks; akin to 4 brains on a single chip

Hyderabad, Sept. 6 Chip major Intel today announced the launch of quad-core processors designed for servers running multiple applications.

These processors bring in the advantage of ‘virtualising’ information access from anywhere in a system. The best part is even if one of the operating system fails, these processors help access from other source within a company.

The Director-Sales, Intel South Asia, Mr R. Ravichandran, said these Intel Xeon multi-processor servers would now form the backbone of enterprises delivering new levels of performance.

Addressing a press conference here today to announce the launch of a family of Xeon processors, Mr Ravichandran said that these processors have the capability to handle multiple tasks and are akin to four brains on a single chip.

Higher memory

In addition to twice the number of cores, the 7300 series and Intel chipset offer up to four times the memory capacity of Intel’s previous platforms.

The six new Quad-Core Xeon 7300 series processors can deliver more than twice the performance and more than three times the performance per watt over the company’s previous generation dual-core products. They complete the transition to energy efficient core micro-architecture.

Explaining the advantage of such processors, Mr Ravichandran said that in data intensive enterprises and data centres, these bring about seamlessness in information retrieval. Through couple of case studies and representatives of users, including from a bank, who have deployed quad-core processors, Intel demonstrated how they experienced superior performance.

Ideal for biz intelligence

These would fit well into environments with multiple servers and large databases, and prove to be ideal for business intelligence.

Mr Ravichadran said that a large part of the work for the quad-core processors, such as design, validation and testing was handled by engineers based in the Digital Enterprise group of Intel India at Bangalore.

Servers based on Xeon processors are expected to be announced by more than 50 system manufacturers, including HCL, Wipro, Dell, Egenera, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, HP, Sun and Unisys.

As the company moves on to multi-core processor technologies, the Intel official said that these quad-core processors would be compatible with 45 nanometer technologies.

FOR DESKTOPS TOO

“Early signs point towards some of the personal computers also taking to quad-core processors, especially by gaming enthusiasts in the South East Asian region and in desktops in some of the enterprises in India. As of now, though the focus from a desktop perspective continues to be dual-core processors, more may transition to quad-core processors by next year,” he said.
