Indian skilled, semi-skilled workers can work in EU

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept 6 Indian semi-skilled and skilled workers can now look forward to working in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK rather than seeking employment only in West Asia.

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Organisation for Migration for implementation of a project aimed at facilitating development of legal immigration, enhancing co-operation on legal migration management, reducing irregular migration and enhancing placement capacity among recruiting agencies among others.

The project seeks to promote and facilitate legal migration of Indian workers to the European Union through a wide range of activities including training at the national level for the potential workers and recruiters and preparation of a national manpower profile for overseas employment.

The project also envisages a pilot placement programme between India and the five EU countries.

The Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Mr Vayalar Ravi, told the Rajya Sabha that the project would help diversify India’s overseas employment destination base to a region where considerable employment opportunities are expected to emerge in the ensuing years.
