Increasing yield: A vendor selling coconut saplings at a street corner in Kochi, Kerala. The Union Ministry for Commerce and Industry has come out with rejuvenation package for the coconut sector, which will get an estimated Rs 1,500 crore to be spent on four lakh hectares in 15 years. The country’s average annual coconut production in 2004-05 was 12.83 billion nuts from 1,935 lakh hectares with a yield of 6,632 nuts per hectare. –
