Preliminary steps on for new dam at Mullaperiyar

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 6 The Kerala Government has initiated preliminary steps for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar.

The Minister for Water Resources, Mr N.K. Premachandran, said in reply to a question in the State Assembly on Thursday that the Government had decided to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar and the Irrigation IDRB section had been entrusted with taking up the preliminary work related to the project.

Consequently, the Ernakulam Minor Irrigation Investigation Sub-division has been shifted to Kattapana Division in order to conduct a feasibility study and put together the project report.

The preliminary report and abstract estimates had already been prepared, the Minister said.

In reply to another question, the Minister said that the Tamil Nadu Government had filed a case in the Supreme Court complaining that the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation Amendment Act passed by the Kerala Government was against the Constitution.

Kerala filed a counter affidavit on September 9, 2006, in the court.

Later, Kerala filed a ‘written statement’ and a ‘counter affidavit to the supplementary affidavit filed by the state of Tamil Nadu’ on August 30, 2007.

The case has been listed for further hearing on September 27, 2007, the Minister said.

He informed the House that the counter affidavit filed by Kerala in the Supreme Court had mentioned that a new dam at Mullaperiyar was feasible and that this would be done in such way as to address the justifiable requirements of Tamil Nadu and at the same time dispel the anxieties of Kerala.
