Hyderabad, Sept. 6
Betting big on retail boom in India, New Zealand companies are keen to sell retail technology to Indian firms.
“We have already provided cold chain technology for big names in Indian retail such as Reliance and Bharti. Currently, at least eight of our companies are holding talks with their Indian counterparts for selling technology,” Mr Paul Vaughan, Trade Commissioner (South Asia), New Zealand, told Business Line on the sidelines of a New Zealand Education Fair here on Thursday.
The interest of New Zealand timber companies in investing in India is also growing.
“New Zealand has fine soft timber. Our companies are eyeing a business opportunity in providing pinewood for high-end constructions in India,” he said.
Education in NZ
A model wood house was set up in Gurgaon to showcase the fine quality of New Zealand wood for decorative purposes, he added.
On the education front, New Zealand is looking at attracting over 4,000 Indian students this year.
“Last year, 3,000 Indian students came to New Zealand marking a 25 per cent increase over previous year’s count,” Mr Vaughan said.
Education in New Zealand universities was a sure path to permanent residency, he said, adding: “Foreign students in New Zealand will be given a six-month work permit. If they can find a job in that time, they will be offered permanent residency as well,” he explained.
The bilateral trade between India and New Zealand was valued at about 750 million New Zealand dollars in 2006-07.
