Dow to make India its R&D hub

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 7

Dow Chemicals is planning to make India its research and development hub and will move 50 per cent of global research activity to India over the next five years.

“Dow will significantly increase its R&D head count in India in two to three years from now in view of huge talent pool here,” Mr Peter G. Halloran, Director of Dow’s supply chain expertise centre, Mumbai, said at ‘Global Supply Chain Summit 2007’ in Indian School of Business here on Friday. The firm would increase its head from 100 to 500 in Pune (chemistry research division), from 100 to 1,000 in Chennai (engineers) and from 250 to 1,000 in Mumbai (shared services business), he told Business Line later.

Growth strategy

“We are putting in place a huge growth strategy in India, West Asia and China,” he added.

Mr Ravi Kallayil, Director (Operations), Nike India Pvt Ltd, said delivery precision was a key to better supply chain solutions. In view of the shirking time to market and need to maintain manufacturing cycles, there is a need for multiple supply chains, he opined.

Mr Ramesh Mangaleswaran, Partner, McKinsey and Company, said India was undergoing manufacturing renaissance and effective supply chain solutions were a must for growth of manufacturing sector.

“In the last quarter manufacturing industry recorded an impressive 10 per cent growth and this makes supply chain issues more relevant,” he pointed out.
