‘Most nations don’t have factors to support IT sector’

India among top 22 nations in labour productivity: Study

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, Sept. 7 A country-wise comparison of IT industry competitiveness, commissioned by Business Software Alliance and developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), has revealed that very few countries possessed the necessary factors to support a thriving IT sector.

What is heartening though is India’s position – at 10th place in the Asia-Pacific region and 46th globally in the overall comparison of competitiveness.

Key issues

The study addressed key issues such as enablers for developing competitive IT firms and the leveraging factors to bolster the sector to participate in global networked economy.

It underscored factors such as skills supply, a pro-innovation culture, technology and legal infrastructure, a well-balanced Government support and a business-friendly environment.

It concluded by stating that all but four of the top 22 countries in the EIU index figured among the world’s top countries in terms of IT labour productivity.

The EIU study also found that few nations’ IT sectors could compensate for major environmental weaknesses.

“India is among the top 22 countries in IT labour productivity, and like China, is one of the few countries to parlay factors such as workforce size, low wages or language attributes, strong sector performance and compensating for weakness in the business environment. However, both these countries will need to improve on their enablers as their cost advantages would otherwise erode.”

The study foresees the skills-rich emerging markets to move up the index.
