Human Resources Nasscom test for engineering grads planned
Our Bureau Kolkata, Sept. 7 Nasscom has proposed to soon put in place NACTECH — Nasscom Assessment of Competence (NAC) test — for engineering and computer science graduates. The idea behind the exercise is to standardise the assessment of skills required by professionals in the IT industry. This was stated by Mr Kiran Karnik, President of Nasscom, during his interaction with reporters at a function held here on Friday to mark the inauguration of Nasscom’s regional office in Kolkata. Mr Karnik said NACTECH would be for the IT services industry what NAC has been to the ITES-BPO industry. A pilot project in this regard is likely to be rolled out by the year-end. ‘Workforce development’
NAC has been launched as part of Nasscom’s initiatives aimed at “proactive workforce development” for the ITES-BPO sector. By following a three-phased strategy, Nasscom aims to build a base of ITES-BPO manpower that will be certified in tune with the needs of the industry and geared up to meet the future requirements of the industry. In November 2006, the national rollout of NAC began in Rajasthan, and more than 2,500 candidates appeared for the test in Ajmer and Jaipur. The NAC test is expected to be rolled out in Gujarat later this month, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh. According to Mr Karnik, the National Skills Registry — that was launched in January 1996 — has details of one lakh workers in the IT industry and includes the employees’ professional history, education and personal background. It is hoped that the NSR list would comprise 4-5 lakh IT professionals by the end of the current fiscal. Mr Karnik also said that an independent body would be set up to delve into issues pertaining to cyber crime. It would be incubated by Nasscom and called the Data Security Council of India.
