Maruti overtakes rivals in Indonesia

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 7 Maruti Udyog Ltd is all set to become big in the Indonesian small car market. In the current fiscal, the company has been able to capture about 60 per cent of the small car market over there with an export order worth 12,000 units, 1,000 units more than what the company had said in June.

“The Indonesian small car market is small, while the overall auto market there is dominated by SUVs. However, with the launch of Estilo since a few months back, we have been able to capture about 60 per cent of the compact car market,” said Maruti company spokesperson.

He said the company had been able to overtake brands such as Chinese car QQ Chery and Hyundai’s Atos that has about 10 per cent of the small car market there.

Apart from Indonesia, the company has also started exporting Alto in small numbers to the Philippines and Wagon R in the neighbouring countries.

Of the total exports till August in the current financial year, the company shipped out 5,000 units to Indonesia and to non- European countries such as Latin America, West Asia and South East Asia.

Mr Khattar had stated in the company’s annual report released recently that the company would export 55,000 units in the current fiscal.
