New Delhi, Sept. 7 The total number of direct tax payers is on the rise, going by data for the last three financial years submitted to the Lok Sabha today.

The total number of direct tax payers 2004-05 stood at 3.08 crore.

The outstanding demand for direct taxes for 2006-07 stood at Rs 1,16,453 crore, said Union Finance Minister Mr P. Chidambaram in a written reply.
