Petroleum States - Andhra Pradesh Expert predicts oil crisis
Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Sept. 9 Though there are still a thousand billion barrels of crude left in India beneath the ground, an oil crisis may catch up with the country by 2035, according to Prof S.J. Chopra, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Petroleum, Dehra Dun. Delivering the Prof Chelikani Chiranjivi Endowment Lecture in Andhra University on the energy scenario in India, he said that India currently produces only 30 per cent of its crude requirement. By 2035, the world would require double the energy required today. “Energy poverty is emerging as a major problem for all developing nations.” He also said that the role of LNG would be crucial during the next 2-3 decades in meeting the energy requirements, adding that India too should plan and build up the requisite infrastructure accordingly. He stressed the need to explore renewable sources of energy and developing the requisite technologies, especially solar energy devices, to meet future energy requirements. Prof L. Venugopala Reddy, the Vice-chancellor of Andhra University, presided over the meeting.
