New Delhi, Sept. 10 Volvo India Pvt Ltd plans to almost double its exports to other Asian countries.

“At present, we are exporting trucks to Korea, buses to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. We are looking to export 2,000 units by next year,” Mr Eric Leblanc, Managing Director, Volvo India Pvt Ltd, told Business Line at the sid elines of a press interaction.

He, however, added that the increase in its exports would not require any capacity expansion. “We would operate the existing facility in a double shift, if required,” he said. “At present, the company is exporting 1,000 units and is manufacturing about 1,600 units of trucks and buses for the domestic market.

“But the current plant has a capacity to be scaled up to 4,000 units,” said a senior Volvo official.

Currently, the company is in the 25-49 tonnes heavy duty truck segment and intends to enter the 16-tonnes and above segment.

“We are a niche player and in order to increase our market share we want to foray into the commercial vehicles category. We are exploring all three options — joint ventures, technology sharing alliances with local partner or it could also be an acquisition,” said Mr Leblanc.

Commenting on its partnership with Nissan diesel trucks, Mr Leblanc said that the company was considering the tie-up for the Indian market.

Since Volvo India is currently manufacturing on its global platform, the company is looking for a partner to localise its products in an attempt to corner 25 per cent of the market share, he added.
