Vijaya Bank to step up priority sector lending

Hyderabad, Sept. 10 The total business generated by the Hyderabad region of Vijaya Bank this financial year stood at Rs 3,168 crore at the end of August.

Out of 44 branches in the region, 38 are under online banking facility covering 87.95 per cent of the total business, according to Mr P. Satish Shetty, Regional Manager.

Speaking at the sensitisation programme on priority sector advances here on Monday, Mr Shetty said the total priority sector lending of Vijaya Bank during the first quarter ended June 2007 was Rs 10,431 crore as against Rs 7,676 crore as on comparative period last year, recording a growth of 36 per cent.

The conference was held in the backdrop of increasing importance to the priority sector advances in general and agriculture and small and medium enterprises (SME) sectors in particular, according to a press release from the bank.

The chief guest, Ms Anitha Ramachandran, Director, Self-Help Groups, Andhra Pradesh State Rural Development, highlighted various aspects of priority sector lending, with particular emphasis on SHG finance.

The priority sector advances in the Hyderabad region stood at Rs 695 crore at the end of August, 2007.
