Oilseeds & Edible Oil Vanaspati industry in a bad shape
Our Bureau Mumbai, Sept.11 The Indian vanaspati industry has possibly never been in a worse shape than now. Out of 267 installed units of production, only 120 are reported to be in working condition. At a mere 20 per cent, capacity utilisation is abysmal. Vanaspati production has been steadily declining. In fiscal 2006-07, production dipped to 10.9 lakh tonnes from 11.5 lt in the previous year. Giving a status report on the industry at the annual general meeting of Indian Vanaspati Producers Association, the President Mr J. K. Khaitan told members that the primary reason for the dismal performance was the heavy inflow of duty-free vanaspati from Nepal and Sri Lanka following the bilateral free trade agreement. The Government has refused to take cognisance of threat to the domestic producers from such imports. As regards nutritional values, the association has recommended range-based declaration on the labels and omission of the declaration of the amount and type of fatty acids.
