Excavators begin work on beached ship

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Sept. 11 The process of stabilising m.v. Cheng Le Men – which beached off Mangalore coast on Friday – has gained momentum with the salvage team from Singapore pressing into service two excavators to shift the cargo.

Capt Mohan Kudari, Port Officer of Old Mangalore Port, told Business Line that 25 labourers are on job to shift iron ore cargo.

Two excavators – one in cargo hold number 3 and another in cargo hold number 2 – are shifting the cargo from right side of the ship to left side. One more tug from Mumbai is likely to reach Mangalore by Wednesday night to assist in the stabilisation operation of the ship, he added. It may be mentioned here that SMIT International Salvage Company began work on pumping out water from the cargo hold of the ship on Sunday.
