Nilgiris vying for floral market

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Sept. 11 Representatives of the floriculture units from the Nilgiris are congregating in New Delhi from September 12-14 to benefit from the presence of global buyers and expert florists coming to attend the 3rd International Flora exhibition and conference.

“The Nilgiris is trying to get a fair share of the Rs 600-crore domestic market which is growing at 20 per cent per annum and Rs 300-crore export market which is growing at 25 per cent annually. In the Nilgiris, more units are coming up and in the context of poor tea economy, farmers are regarding floriculture as a sunrise sector. That is why we are trying to garner support from national and international buyers”, Dr. S. Ramu, Executive Director, Hill Queen Agri Tech told Bu siness Line.

By now, almost 32 hectares are under flower cultivation in the Nilgiris. The Governments in the State and the centre are extending support to the farmers to increase the area.

Since February, a flower auction centre has been functioning in Udhagamandalam. The district also has an Agricultural Export Zone.

“But, all these are progressing at a snail’s pace compared to the growth elsewhere. So, we are determined to strengthen our direct market base.

This is part of India’s effort to increase its global market share which is presently only 0.61 per cent of a Rs 49,500 crore market”, said Mr. H. Vasudevan, Chairman.
