Ministry of Overseas Indians plans think-tank

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 11 THE Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) is to set up a Council for Promotion of Overseas Employment that would function as a think tank for conducting international labour market research and devising strategies for enabling Indian workers to avail themselves of employment opportunities overseas.

Addressing the second annual conference of Heads of Indian Missions of six Gulf Cooperation Council, Malaysia, Jordan, Libya and Yemen, the Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Mr Vayalar Ravi, said that a proposal for the amendment to the Emigration Act has been finalised and was expected to be placed before the Cabinet soon.

The Amendment would give Indian Missions a statutory role in the protection and welfare of workers and also provide stringent action against unscrupulous recruiting agents and those involved in human smuggling.

The Minister said that suspension of the Emigration Clearance system for those traveling on visit visa is being done away with and this would benefit5-6 lakh international travelers from India. The move would also result in a saving of about Rs 100 crore, Mr Vayalar Ravi said.
