Telecommunications Marketing - Regulatory Bodies & Rulings
Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 12 Taking suo motu cognisance of the recent media reports relating to tariff hike by leading telecom companies Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission has asked its Director General of Investigation and Registration to carry out an enquiry into the decision of the two companies. The Commission has noted that the tariff hike is near simultaneous and hence it suspects the companies may be indulging in cartelisation. They could have taken the decision in understanding with each other with the intention of minimising the competition, according to the Commission. This amounts to restrictive trade practice. ‘Unfair practice’MRTPC also noted that the consumers were not taken into confidence about the tariff hike as they were not informed by the companies properly. This amounts to unfair trade practice. The announcement of tariff hike was made through small newspaper advertisements, it noted. The Director-General has been given 60 days to file the investigation report. It will issue notices to the telecom companies seeking explanations from them for the hike. The telecom companies last month had raised the local call charges, STD rates and short-messaging service charges.
