‘Farm sector getting less sulphur’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 12

Sulphur Mills Ltd, a Mumbai-based manufacturer of sulphur powders for different agricultural and commercial applications, has said that agriculture in the country fell short of 16 lakh tonnes (lt) of sulphur annually.

Quoting studies, it said the total production and application of sulphur-containing fertiliser was put at 50 lt a year, providing about seven lt of sulphur. However, the total crop requirement of sulphur is calculated at 23 lt, leaving a huge deficit of 16 lt, according to Mr Suketu Doshi, Director (Marketing), Sulphur Mills.

Stating that excessive removal of soil sulphur was more than its replenishment, the company said excessive use of sulphur-free fertilisers such as urea for decades.

The deficiency resulted in reduction of yields, thus, cutting into the incomes of farmers, particularly those who grew rice, cotton, Bengal gram and chilly.
