Kerala shopping fest from Dec 1

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 12 From December 1, the State will play host to the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, the State Tourism Minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said that the event would end on January 15, next year.

The 45-day long event is intended to help the growth of Kerala’s tourism sector and also its traditional industries, he pointed out. The shopping festival will showcase the State’s traditional products such as coir, handloom fabric and handicrafts, he added.

Comprehensive event

The festival will cover the entire State, with events organised in each of Kerala’s 14 districts, Mr Balakrishnan said. The festival, which will coincide with the peak tourism season, will also include cultural events. The State Government plans to make it an annual event, he added.

The State Finance Minister, Dr T.M. Thomas Issac, who was also present at the press conference, said that the idea behind the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival is to transform the State into a major international shopping destination in about five years.

Kerala has a number of unique traditional products to offer shoppers and can also offer tourists an opportunity to see how many of these traditional products are manufactured, he pointed out.

In his budget speech, Dr Issac had announced the Government’s intention to organise an annual shopping festival. Essential infrastructure will be improved to support the festival, he said.
