Bharti Airtel awarded licence in Singapore

Bharti Airtel’s global connectivity endeavour has got a boost with the company being awarded the facility based operator licence in Singapore. This licence will enable Bharti to have a point of presence in Singapore and will provide a geographic platform for voice, data and roaming connectivity to over 90 countries as multitude of operators in these countries use Singapore as a gateway to Asia. Bharti already has a landing station in Chennai which also has direct connectivity to Singapore, thus enabling seamless scaling up of capacity. This will, through definitive agreements with operators, reduce costs of international connectivity and roaming for Bharti. If this connectivity (across 90 countries) can be used to offer a more comprehensive roaming facility to subscribers, it could also help realizations. Increasingly, leading telecom operators are trying to create a global connectivity footprint of their own; Reliance Communications’ acquisition of Flag Telecom and Yipes are cases in point. Such connectivity enables network cost optimisation, helps tap new markets for voice and data services and helps provide roaming facilities in a wider range of countries thus facilitating higher margins. This move, along with Bharti’s recent mobile services foray into Sri Lanka, reinforces the fact that the company is keenly looking at overseas market to augment its domestic success.
