Small-scale paint cos urged to gear up for cluster shift
Our Bureau
Kolkata, Sept. 13 Urging the eastern region paint small scale industries (SSIs) to better organise themselves through their respective trade organisations for relocating to the proposed Rs 400-crore paints industry cluster in West Bengal, Mr K.S. Singhwan, zonal head of Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), said here on Thursday that “natural growth” was very important for cluster development.
He also urged the micro units, 90 per cent of whom were still proprietary concerns, to corporatise without any further delay through induction of professional management.
He said that while the traditional clusters developed in the past were more geographically oriented for heavy employment generation, the modern day ones start by linking with large units, and later take to diversification.
He cited the example of the sprawling Gurgaon industrial cluster, which started as an auto hub after Maruti began production, and has now diversified into many areas including IT.
Feasibility study
According to him, all key areas such as infrastructure, technology, marketing and finance need to be addressed upfront. Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS) is now working on a feasibility study for the proposed paints cluster in Bengal, for which land has already been identified along the Durgapur headway.
