‘Give priority for old ayacut’

Coimbatore, Sept. 14

A farmers’ body in Salem has urged the State Government to ensure irrigation to old ayacut of the Vashista river flowing in the district. The construction of Anaimaduvu and Kariakoil dams across the river has deprived the old ayacut of river irrigation thereby creating uncertainty for the farmers of these lands in getting timely irrigation, according to the United Farmers Association of Salem. The association in a statement has urged the Tamil Nadu government to acco rd priority to old ayacut in irrigation and only the surplus water from these dams should be extended to the newly-added ayacuts. The association has also asked the State to put an end to encroachments that have cropped up in irrigation water bodies by the private individuals. —
