Trent opens Star Bazaar in Mumbai

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Sept 14 Trent Ltd, the retail company of the Tatas, has launched its Star Bazaar hypermarket in Mumbai at Thakur Mall, in suburban Dahisar, according to Ms Neeti Chopra, Marketing Head.

The 50,000-sq ft hypermarket will offer non-vegetarian food, run a live bakery and sell in-house labels of garments, among other things.

“After much deliberation we have decided the brand names of our value apparel, priced from Rs 99 onwards. Edward, France Giovanni, Spike and Fashion Street are different categories of men’s wear while Navya is Indian wear and Tammy is kids wear,” she said.

The garments are sourced from across the country — including Jaipur, Tirupur and Mumbai. Selling in-house labels, be it garments, staples or home cleaners, has been profitable for Trent, she said.

“Our own labels are doing well which I think is mainly because we are able to customise to our audience’s needs. Going forward, we will look at increasing the mix in our in-house labels.”

Trent operates a 50,000-sq ft Star Bazaar in Ahmedabad, which was set up in 2004. The company plans to launch its third hypermarket in Bangalore within the next two months, followed by one in Mumbai by December-January. The company aims to be in the top 15 to 20 cities and open 23 to 25 Star Bazaars by 2009-10.

To manage the back end of the hypermarket, Trent has tied up with regional vendors and small operators for transportation of goods.
