Textiles Automotive textile market may touch Rs 3,200 cr by 2011
Our Bureau Mumbai, Sept. 14 The market size for automotive textiles will double from Rs1,614 crore to over Rs 3,200 crore by 2011-12, according to Mrs. Shashi Singh, Joint Textile Commissioner. She was speaking at the conference on automotive textiles organised by FICCI jointly with SASMIRA here recently. As India was emerging as a supplier to European and the US markets, it was necessary to adopt global regulatory norms on air bags, seat belts and so on. Non-flammability as also odour and anti-bacterial performance norms are strict in matured markets, she pointed out. The President of SASMIRA, Mr Maganlal Doshi demanded that Bureau of Indian Standards develop specifications for functional textiles as auto manufacturers in the country working on their own specifications was a matter of concern. Demand for technical textiles in the transport sector is expected to touch $29 billion by 2010 based on CAGR projection of 13 per cent during 2005-2010. The potential for the growth of automotive textile business may be gauged from the explosive expansion projected for car production, with Asia-Pacific as the growth driver. Globally 65.1 million cars are produced. It will grow to 75.7 million by 2011 at a CAGR of 3.6 per cent, with Asia-Pacific region enjoying a large share, according to Mr. Vipin Bhargava of Reliance Industries. Natural products such as banana and jute fibres have the potential for extensive use for production of automotive textile fabrics for interiors and carpets, a Coimbatore-based textile consultant told the participants.
