Good demand for CTC teas at Kolkata sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Sept. 16 Last week, there was good demand for CTC teas at North Indian auction centres, according to J. Thomas & Company Private Ltd, the tea auctioneers.

Select good quality reached firm to occasionally dearer levels, while the remainder recorded a slight easing, following quality. Plainer sorts were steady. Enquiry was forthcoming from the major blenders, western Indian and other domestic market buyers.

Orthodox varieties saw good inquiry at fully firm to dearer rates, from the West Asian and CIS buyers, as well as a major blender and North India.

Darjeeling teas were well received at firm to dearer levels, with good inquiry from the blenders, local dealers as well as traditional export markets.

Crop prospects

Cold and rainy conditions continued over the last week in the tea growing regions of North India, and crop intakes slowed down noticeably as a result.

Global trends

Sri Lankan markets were strong with prices appreciating for all categories, following good support from Russia, Iran and Germany.

Kenyan teas saw strong demand at all around dearer rates following quality, with best BP1s appreciating up to US 40 cents.
