‘Delhi most polluted among mega cities’

New Delhi, Sept. 16 Among all the mega cities in the country Delhi has the highest pollution level with the level of respirable particulate matter (RSPM) in the air at 115 while it is lowest in Mumbai (RSPM 79), according to the findings of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The National Air Quality Monitoring Programme conducted by the CPCB across 51 cities has identified Gobindgarh (RSPM 250) in Punjab as the highest polluted city and Gajraula in Uttar Pradesh (RSPM 60) as the least polluted one, an official release has said.

As a whole India is among the most polluted countries in the world ranking 101 among 146 countries, as per the findings of Environmental Sustainability Index based on 2005 data, the release added.

The Government has initiated several steps to curb pollution. These include an auto fuel policy for controlling vehicular pollution, introduction of Euro-II emission norms for the whole country and Euro-III norms for 11 mega cities as well as introduction of Euro-II and Euro-III compliant-fuel for the whole country and 11 mega cities, respectively.

Introduction of stricter pollution control certification norms for both commercial and private vehicles and developing mass rapid transport system in select cities.

Other steps include notification of general and source-specific environmental standards, preparation of area-specific environmental management plan in critically polluted areas and strict monitoring of environmental compliance, the release said.
