The Hindu Business Line : Infrastructure facilities: Spices Board plans 6 parks

Coonoor, Sept. 17 The Spices Board is contemplating to set up at least six ‘spices parks’ and regional quality testing and control laboratories across various locations.

Disclosing the board’s proposed initiatives, its Chairman, Mr V.J. Kurian, said a park for garlic, chilli and coriander leaf was proposed at Chhindwara district in Madhya Pradesh; for pepper and cardamom at Idukki in Kerala; for turmeric and chilli at Erode in Tamil Nadu and Guntur in Andhra; for mint at Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh and for cumin, coriander and fennel at Kota/Jalore in Rajasthan.

These parks would provide the infrastructure facilities such as common cleaning, grading, processing, packing, powdering, extraction and quality testing; have scientific storage facility, act as a facilitator for technology transfer and provide training on GAP and quality requirements of spices to various stakeholders.

Such facilities are aimed at eliminating the intermediaries in the supply chain and making the produce available to the end consumer at relatively lower rates.

Outlay

The board envisages an outlay of Rs 10 crore for each of these parks towards setting up the infrastructure facilities.
