Ministry move to aid growth of aviation hubs

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Sept. 18 The Government could link the liberalisation of aviation with the development of airport infrastructure around the country. The Ministry of Civil Aviation feels that this would ensure the development of global hubs around the country.

A senior official of the Ministry told Business Line that with two new airports at Bangalore and Hyderabad scheduled to open in less than a year and the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports expected to finish soon thereafter, the Government could look at dovetailing the development of these airports with following a more liberal aviation policy with various countries.

“The Ministry will be working with the various airport developers so that aviation hubs can be created in India. We may even look at taking the airport officials for bilateral air services talks as observers as the new airports coming up have the potential to rival aviation hubs in the region,” officials added. The move could see the country entering into liberal air services agreement with several countries so as to ensure that air travel between India and different parts of the world becomes easier.

The current thinking in the Government has also found favour with the global aviation alliances, which see India as a natural area for a global hub. The Managing Partner of Oneworld, Mr John McCulloch, feels that with all the activity taking place in the aviation sector it was only natural for the country to become an aviation hub.
