Xilinx to make India centre a global R&D hub

Inducts new Managing Director

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 18 Fabless semiconductor company Xilinx Inc has announced the move to make Hyderabad centre its R&D hub for global operations.

Significantly, from a centre that had focused mainly on IP core creation, it now plans to add software development work, application systems and related work for programmable logic systems and electronic design automation (EDA) tools.

The Managing Director of India operations of Xilinx, Mr Mallik Moturi, said that Asia Pacific has emerged as one of the fastest growing markets for Xilinx and with a mandate for a very broad spectrum of work, the nature of engagement is set to get a lot more encompassing.

Mr Moturi, who took over as Managing Director of India operations, said: “Xilinx India will now play a crucial role in the entire chain of global R&D activities including IP core development, software development and systems and applications. This means we are setting up core groups to address each of this new area of focus and recruit in all these areas.”

The Xilinx India arm based at Hyderabad has thus far developed 60 IP cores and believes that areas such as defence surveillance systems, automotive, and digital entertainment devices, including mobile phones, are set to grow presenting opportunities to work with the ecosystem.

The Executive Vice-President of Xilinx, Mr Iain Morris, while welcoming Mr Moturi on to Xilinx fold, said: “India will now undertake global projects of strategic importance and also serve the Asia Pacific region.”

Corpus fund

The company has created a Xilinx Asia Fund with a corpus of $10 million aimed at investing in companies that compliment their nature of work and expects to make couple of investments in some of these companies.

The semiconductor industry is passing through a transition from 90-nanometer to 65 to 45-nanometer technologies and Xilinx expects to play a role in all of these areas.
