Rupee gains against dollar

Mumbai, Sept. 18

The rupee appreciated by around 7 paise against the dollar on Tuesday tracking the gains made in the stock market. The currency opened at 40.56/57 and touched an intra-day low of 40.62. It finally closed at 40.48 against the previous close at 40.55/56. Dealers said the currency opened weak but responded quickly to the upswing in the stock market. “There was good supply of dollars as foreign banks were seen selling the greenback,” said a dealer at a private bank .
